How To Transition To Clean Eating On A Budget

Today more than 95% of all chronic disease is caused by food choice, toxic ingredients, nutritional deficiencies and lack of physical exercise... The hard question we have to ask ourselves is, are you a part of that statistic?

Eating healthy, and eating “clean” for that matter doesn't have to be hard. And maintaining a healthy diet doesn't mean that you need to use worksheets, calculators or constantly be counting macros to hit your desired wellness goals.

But with a little planning, and smart shopping strategies, you CAN make this a lifestyle fit for you - no matter the size of your paycheck, or busy schedule.

Remember sister, it’s your choice to make!
WHY EAT CLEAN?
Clean eating is about feeding your body the best - so it can preform its best. The foods we eat help us build and retain muscle, maintain a healthy immune system, and protect our organs from harm.

A clean diet means cooking many things from scratch, and buying organic ingredients. In many cases, clean eating has gotten a bad rep, in many cases stating that it's just too hard - and takes too long to eat clean.

By eating clean, you will not only feel good about what you are putting into your body - but you will also see the results. "When eating a clean diet, your body will be able to improve digestion, increase energy levels, and reduce risk for disease" according to a study published by Nutrition Reviews in 2013.

…and isn’t that what we all want that?

Let’s talk about the “5 Principles” of Clean Eating…
Clean simple eats, Clean eating diet, Clean eating food list, Clean eating on a budget, Healthy clean recipes, The clean diet, Healthy clean eating, 30 day clean eating meal plan, Clean eating 101, Easy clean eating recipes for beginners
The "5 Principles" of Clean Eating : Clean Eating 101
1 - Choose whole, all-natural foods! Avoid processed, artificially, and refined foods.
2 - Read labels! If the food label includes more than 5 ingredients, it's likely not clean. If you can't pronounce it - don't eat it.
3 -  Incorporate a mixture of ingredient to maintain balance! Make sure to include protein, carbohydrates, and good fats within each meal.
4 -  Buy organic, non-processed, nitrite, nitrosamines, and hormone free meats! If possible, buying humanely-raised meat will avoid many of these harmful additives.
5 -  Fall in love with taking care of your body! It's the only one you have, so it's time to start taking care of it.
The most important aspect of living this kind of lifestyle, is that your foods are as close to possible as their natural, unaltered state. Not from a mixture of processed, artificially colored / flavored chemical-based substances and food.

Clean eating is also not to be confused with eating raw - or completely plant-based, or vegan either.

What you are eliminating from your diet when transitioning to eating clean are the processed, fake ingredients. Sure, these foods can be quick and easy to resort to consuming, and even cheap to buy - but it's also proven that these foods are high in refined sugars, additives, preservatives, sodium and unhealthy fats (saturated and trans fats). Not to mention linked to major leading causes of cancer.

These “foods,” mixed with your health - are just a recipe for disaster…
GROCERY SHOPPING TIPS :
There are many concerns around clean eating, especially the cost and the amount of time it takes to prepare everything. And I get that. Especially with kids, or during stressful times like the Corona Virus where shelves are close to bare and people are more anxious than ever to be around.

But with a bit of pre-planning, and shopping with a strategy, a clean eating lifestyle can be completely possible for you and your family!

I personally love to grocery shop. I know, it’s weird. I get it all the time. I’m one of those shoppers who shops for a few days, or for a week max and then I’m back again with another list and new meals.

There’s something about it that brings me back to being with my Grandma as a young girl. Getting our supper for the night, planning together all the ingredients we would need, she made it fun and I try to go back to that place each time I go in.

So I want to make grocery shopping fun for you! And the first way to doing that, is by going in with a plan.

Here are a few grocery shopping tips to remember:
#1 - Shop the perimeter of the store! The rim of the grocery store will have most all of your desire clean eating ingredients (fresh produce, meats, and diary products).
#2 - Buy fresh produce that is in season! Not only will this save you money, but the produce will taste that much better.
#3 - Incorporate plant-based meals into your routine! Not only can high-quality meats be expensive, you also want to make sure you are giving your digestive track a break once an a while! Incorporating plant-based proteins will save you money, but add new tasty options.
#4 - Go to the store prepared! Always bring a list << this is like a MUST for me! Shopping without preparation will lead to making "bad" choices, and leave you feeling like you didn't get anything you came for.
#5 - Buy in bulk if needed! Save yourself some time and money. Get comfortable freezing foods and meals for later during the week. Mark with the name and date, and enjoy!
#6 - Find & shop at a local farmers market! "You can eat well and pay the farmer, or you can eat unhealthy and pay the hospital." Make sure that the produce you are purchasing, is still of high-quality value (organic, all-natural, pesticide-free).
That brings us to a really important topic…

Organic vs None Organic - And why should I care?

This topic really hits home for me. Maybe it's because I have personally studied the incredibly devastating amounts of toxins within our environment, and foods - or maybe it's from choosing to be vegan a year or so ago... Or maybe it’s because my family members think I’m a wacko for buying into this theory - either way, choosing organic is never a tough decision for me to make.

"You may hear, "Organic food isn't any more nutritious — so don't waste your money.”

“However, The Soil Association notes that an organic diet increases the consumption of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. Health and safety should not be confused with nutrition.

While most research can't prove, beyond a doubt that organic food is more nutritious, it is much safer, which may translate to a healthier body, able to absorb healthy nutrients. Non-organic food often contains harmful hormones and pesticides. Pesticides are poisonous — by nature, they're designed to kill.

Pesticides can cause neurological problems, cancer, infertility, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, allergies and asthma, wheezing, rashes, and other skin problems, ADHD, birth defects and more.

Basic logic would tell you not to eat poison, so why not go organic and avoid pesticides?

According to the Environmental Working Group, nearly three-quarters of 7,000 produce samples tested by the USDA in 2014 contained pesticide residues. In some cases, these pesticides persisted on fruits and vegetables even when they were washed or peeled." - published by HuffPost & Wellbalance Business 2016

As one of my favorite wellness quotes states…
"You are what you eat; so don’t be fast, cheap, easy or fake.”
(**Please Note, I am aware there are veggie “sprays” that supposedly remove these toxins - which is in many cases, is completely untrue. As a previous distributor of a large Alkaline water producing machine company called Enagic, I know that the molecules within those “sprays” liquid are not small enough to penetrate most fruits, and especially vegetables skin. Which is where pesticides and herbicides live, meaning that without soaking and the proper removal process, those toxins aren’t going anywhere.

There are Alkaline Machines for your kitchen that you can use to remove these pesticides and herbicides from non-organic foods as well, but these machines range in the thousands+ dollars, so if you’re looking for a quick, instant fix - choose organic).**
THE “DIRTY DOZEN” : Clean Eating Food Lists
Below you will find two lists, the "Dirty Dozen" and the "Clean 15" that are based on results of more than 35,000 food samples that are tested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Knowing these items is going to help you become more prepared, and cautious when choosing produce especially if you aren’t willing to buy all-organic. At least for the Dirty Dozen, you may reconsider…

This list is the 12 foods with the most pesticides tested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2019 :

- Strawberries (the worst)
- Tomatoes (the worst)
- Kale
- Apples
- Grapes
- Spinach
- Peaches
- Cherries
- Pears
- Nectarines
- Celery
- Peppers

I don’t know about you, but I see some of my favorite fruits and veggies on that list above, ones that I eat on a regular basis…

Not only does organic produce tastes better and cleaner, but it’s going to give your body more benefit than harm, and that’s the whole point behind clean eating.
THE “CLEAN 15" : Clean Eating Food Lists
So to transition from foods with the most pesticides, the “Clean 15” is a list of the least.

These are the top 15 foods with the least pesticides tested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2019 :

- Avocados
- Sweet Corn
- Cabbage
- Pineapples
- Peas (frozen or fresh not canned)
- Onions
- Papayas
- Eggplant
- Asparagus
- Kiwi
- Cauliflower
- Cantaloupe
- Broccoli
- Mushrooms
- Honeydew

Feel free to save these two cheatsheets below for future reference on your next grocery shopping trip!
CONCLUSION : How To Transition To Clean Eating All Of The Time
“Americans are the biggest consumer of weight loss products (80%) in the world, yet still lead the world in obesity and unhealthy lifestyle.”

Why do you think that is? At this point it’s pretty clear wouldn’t you say?

From consuming a diet that has little to no nutritional value and is highly processed and loaded with saturated fats.

From my personal experience of living an unhealthy lifestyle for quite some time; ignoring my bodies needs, going hours on end without a single meal, putting work before my physical health, and ultimately having emergency surgery to remove my gallbladder - I too am like a lot of the population who’s struggled most her life with maintaining proper nutritional habits..

So when I ask myself, why would I buy a product in the health space - let alone any product in any space - when looking for change up in my life?

In all honesty and for most of us, its for a quick fix. To find an answer to my personal problems, and to make the process go quicker…

But if I’ve learned anything from my experiences, and especially from my own personal health journey (even if I’m not personally obese) - I know that “being healthy" goes so much deeper than just starting a diet, cutting back soda, eating more “greens” or over-working yourself at the gym…

It’s a true lifestyle change, and commitment.

It’s a level of self respect to treat your body, feed your body, and love your body enough to give it of the highest quality and the upmost nutritional value...

Which is why I decided to create a fun way of transitioning to clean eating on a budget for anyone and everyone to part in over the course of 30 days, for less than $1 a day! ($27 value)
