Antioxidants are good for you, right?

We’ve all heard about them and their importance… But what do antioxidants really do for our bodies? And why is it said to be important to have them in our diet?

So stick with me through the rest of this blog article while I dig deeper into these 4 different areas of Antioxidants :

- What are Antioxidants
- Why do our bodies need Antioxidants
- What are the benefits from Antioxidants & the best ones to use
- How to get Antioxidants into your daily diet
What Are Antioxidants?
To make it an even easier understanding of what antioxidants are, I want to explain to you want “oxidants” are. Oxidants are absorbed into our bodies, and even created within our bodies all of the time.

Oxidants come from primarily external areas and sources which include things like air pollution, radiation, toxins, alcohol, cigarette smoke and even smoke from fires.

Another kind of oxidation is made within our bodies called “free radicals.” If you aren’t familiar with what free radicals are, they are organically formed substances inside your body and while they are there to protect your body from viruses and bacteria, if there is too much in your system, they can become unstable molecules and cause major damage to your bodies cells.

(to be more scientific, a molecule can only be stable if it has the right number of electrons so it a molecule loses an electron too soon or when it shouldn’t, it becomes a free radical inside your body)

So having balanced exposure to oxidants, and oxidation going on in your body is really important because when free radicals are found in high amounts, they can bind themselves to your normal functioning cells and even ones that carry important DNA & proteins and damage their duplication process.

Which is called “oxidative stress” and this in turn causes the potential development of diseases and cancers like Alzheimers, heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and more…

Now that you know what oxidants are, here comes the savor of the day - Antioxidants
antioxidants for acne, antioxidants for skin, antioxidants for skin health, what do antioxidants do, do antioxidants work, best antioxidant supplement, best antioxidants for skin
Why Do Our Bodies Need Antioxidants?
Antioxidants help prevent and can even stop the damage to the bodies cells caused by oxidants and oxidation. They do this by traveling through our bodies bloodstream and binding themselves to the free radicals, causing the free radicals to no longer be able to bind to any other cell and cause damage.

(to be more scientific, Antioxidants provide the electrons that the free radicals are currently missing which in turn neutralizes any further damage)

So having antioxidants in your system is a must-have in controlling the amounts of free radicals in your body on any given basis.

But like anything, having balance is key.

Having an excess of antioxidants can be just as bad and dangerous to your body as having an excess of free radicals. Too much antioxidants can cause weird sudden reactions, affect cancer treatment and even increase risk of cardiovascular complications.

So remember you want a balance between antioxidants and free radicals.
What Are The Benefits From Antioxidants & The Best Ones To Use?
The list of benefits from having a good balance of Antioxidants in your system is honestly unlimited! I like to think of Antioxidants as the hero, the savor of the day and you might even start to feel that way yourself from having them.

Here are a list of key benefits known from taking antioxidants by food AND supplement source :
  • Anti-aging since antioxidants neutralize the affects of free radicals, they play a huge role in the aging process
  • Improve acne & other skin conditions since antioxidants neutralize the affects of free radicals, they can help control the inflammation in the skin which is a cause to many skin conditions and treating acne
  • Help aid in physical recovery since exercise is known to cause the formation of free radicals which affect tissue & muscle recovery over time, antioxidants can neutralize the oxidative affects of exercise and reduce excess free radicals being made
  • Improves memory and has also been tested to reduce the risk of dementia
  • Treat UTI’s as antioxidants help bind iron to the urine (which depletes over time due to oxidative stress) which helps prevent future bacterial growth
  • Promotes liver health which can be heavily affected by oxidative stress and cause a wide spread of different illnesses, but since antioxidants neutralize the affects of oxidation it can help promote healthy liver function
  • Decreases symptoms of depression specifically when using antioxidant vitamins and minerals like Vitamin C, E Selenium and even Zinc
  • Boosts immunity as antioxidants are found in many vitamins, fruits, and vegetables which protects the immune system and overflow of free radicals to affect the system
  • Prevent causes of arthritis and even help treat it because antioxidants are known to fight inflammation in the body caused by excess free radicals
  • Improves mental clarity and focus as antioxidants help improve circulation in the blood vessels inside the brain which increases the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to our brains
Although there are a ton of different antioxidants found within our foods, drinks, and even supplements sources there are a few that are more important to have on a daily basis than others.

Some recommendations state our bodies need 8-11,000 antioxidant units a day to avoid oxidative stress. I personally recommend either asking your primary care physician to run tests and see where your levels are to accurately know how much you need to incorporate, or self-diagnosis yourself and start at the lowest recommended level and see how you feel over time periods - increase if necessary but do not go over the recommended 11,000 units (and I’d still ask your doctor to be safe and not have an excess of antioxidants in your system).

Below you will find a list of some of the most common and most potent Antioxidants :
  • Vitamin A (promotes eye health)
  • Astaxanthin (boosts immunity)
  • Beta-Carotene (anti-aging within the body)
  • Ashwagandha (lowers cortisol - stress hormone)
  • Vitamin E (protects tissues & organs)
  • Indian Gooseberry (improves collagen & skin elasticity)
How To Get Antioxidants Into Your Daily Diet...
We are able to get antioxidants into our daily regimen in a few different ways, and you will likely come across a lot of contradicting statements about what is best, better, or worse to do. Which is why I am not going to make any specific recommendations to you, but just let you in on exactly what I personally do and have had beneficial experiences from.

You can get antioxidants through eating certain foods, consuming specific drinks and also by taking antioxidant supplements through capsules, powders and even small shot-like drinks.

A helpful reference to keep note of is the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) which is a basic score that indicates the amount of antioxidant within any food item or piece of produce. The higher the ORAC score, the more antioxidants it contains.

Some Antioxidant rich foods you can find at many grocery stores are :
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Blackberries
  • Elderberries
  • Red grapes
  • Goji berries
  • Cranberries
  • Raisins
  • Green kale
  • Eggplant
  • Beets
  • Raw broccoli
  • Raw spinach
  • Russet potato
  • Pecan nuts
  • Kidney beans
  • Black beans
  • Dark chocolate
  • Turmeric
  • Cinnamon
  • Oregano
  • Ginger
It’s said that drinking Red Wine and also Green Tea contain high amounts of antioxidants and can boost heart health and cognitive function.

Some Antioxidant rich supplements that can help increase your antioxidant intake are :
  • Vitamin A
  • Selenium
  • Astaxanthin
  • Beta-Carotene
  • Glutathione
  • Ashwagandha
  • Vitamin E
  • Indian Gooseberry
Conclusion
So now that you know what Antioxidants are, you also know what they do for our bodies, their benefits and how to get them into your daily regimen - I want to share with you my personal story on taking Antioxidants and my simple, yet effective routine as well.

When I first started researching into Antioxidants almost a year ago now, I wanted to understand what antioxidants do, if antioxidants worked and if they could truly be the answer to my problem I’d been struggling with for YEARS… Acne.

If you know me then you know I am a pretty healthy eater, and was primarily vegan for a few years as well. I lost my gallbladder in 2015 which set me on a lifelong journey of understanding health, what’s best for me and what isn’t. So when I came across Antioxidants as a way of getting rid of acne, I was all in!

I researched “best antioxidants for skin health” and found a ton of testing and documentation on antioxidants for acne. I wanted to know why Antioxidants would help my acne when it seemed like everything else I had tried over the years didn’t…

“Antioxidants can prevent oily skin, and even stop sebum oxidation, which is the process of sebum oxidizing, increasing keratin, thus becoming pore-blocking and creating a breeding ground for acne.” - thanks Google

And I was sold. I mean, what did I have to lose? My skin at this point was at its worst.
antioxidants for acne, antioxidants for skin, antioxidants for skin health, what do antioxidants do, do antioxidants work, best antioxidant supplement, best antioxidants for skin
So I started looking online for Antioxidant products to incorporate into my routine aside from eating more antioxidant rich foods (I really wanted to kick-start my skin results like ASAP). I joined Facebook groups, I read blog article after blog article, and I even subscribed to nutritionist newsletters to find new ways of getting in my much-needed antioxidants.

What I came across was a product called Elite by a company called Nucerity in one of the Facebook groups I ended up joining for free. Day after day, story after story I saw of ladies having incredible skin - weight, mood, and energy levels totally transformed by drinking 1 pouch of Elite everyday.

…don’t get me wrong, it took me about a month of seeing post after post before I decided to give it a try for myself, but holy smoked - these ladies weren’t kidding.

Each day I drank one pouch in an 16oz shaker bottle and LOVED the taste of every sip!

After the first week, I already felt a total shift in my moods. And after the first month, my skin was already starting to show some serious signs of improvement. The painful, cystic acne I once had all over my jawline, was finally settling down and I’d never felt better.

After month 3, my skin was completely transformed and healthier looking then I have ever seen it in my 28 years of battling acne. See for me, and I am sure so many more of us, don’t struggle with breakouts caused from a bad diet or high sugar intake.

I breakout because I stress out, and then have a tendency of picking at my face. When my hormones get out of whack before & during my period, my face shows it. It’s been a vicious cycle for me since I was a young teen and I finally found something that seemed to be working over the longer term.

Here we are, almost 10 months later and I have done some astounding tests with this product as well. I have stopped taking Elite for certain time periods only to see my skin go right back to its typically irritated and “bumpy” self.

Which has proven to me over time that its the antioxidants my body needs to fight back to high levels of oxidative stress. And if I don’t have them, I not only see it in my skin complexion but I feel it in my mood swings as well.

Elite has 3 of the strongest Antioxidants in it (Astaxanthin, Ashwagandha, and Indian Gooseberry) along side of 2 of the strongest amino acids (L-Lysine and Aloe) your body also cannot internally create. This “super blend” of ingredients promotes internal balance and supports emotional well-being, both reflected in youthful healthy looking skin.

Below you will find my AFTER photos from taking Elite...
