A Four-Step Prescription For Self-Love: 4 Ways to Practice Self-Love and Be Good to Yourself
Written by Kayla Delargy
"Why is it so hard to give love to ourselves?"
Ah, loving yourself. What a better way to connect with your inner being, than by choosing love, am I right?

Which is why it saddens me to think about the lack of self love + self care that we give back to ourselves, especially in times of need.

Why is it so hard to give love to ourselves? To show up as our own best friends? Instead we fall short, and at times become our own worst enemies.

Over the years of embarking on my own self love journey, I have became obsessed with understanding why I put my dreams + desires on the back burner, allowing self doubt to overwhelm me and crumble any hope at creating something more for myself.

Sounds far fetch that I was ever like that because my lifestyle now exudes quite the opposite, but I am far from perfect. There are many moments within my days that I have to check in with myself, and give myself the support needed.

Going through the motions of being a business owner, a wife, a mentor + coach, a support system, podcast host - a perfectionist, and trying to juggle incorporating self love practices has been a roller coaster of experiences.

Some great, some not so good but all leading back to whether or not I love myself.

I use to think it was selfish to put myself first - to make sure what I needed was present was showing a lack of concern to others needs, but over the course of my self love journey I’ve discovered that is the only way to live.

See, when you give yourself partial love, attention, or self care - you give out partial performance, energy and concern.

Think about it…

When you stretch yourself too thin with your time - who suffers most? Sure, those around you likely won’t have a very enjoyable time or experience - but you can absolutely count on that you won’t!

Am I right?

What about when you give - and give, and give some more to a friend, family member or colleague. Do they suffer? Likely not, but I am sure at some point your needs will, if they aren’t already.

The point I am trying to make here isn’t to become selfish, self absorbed and disconnected to those around you.

No. My point is to help you realize your wants, needs, and desires are just as important as those you are putting before your own.

Finding love for yourself, expressing compassion and grace within your days is key in creating a life you truly love.

You might be thinking,

“Great Kayla, I agree with what you’re saying, but how do I actually do it - how do I love myself more?”

Which is such a great question - and one I asked myself over and over along this course of my journey…

So I decided to create a short + sweet self love checklist to incorporate into your daily lifestyle to love yourself more!
how to practice self-love, how to practice self love and care, how to practice self love everyday, how to learn and practice self love
#1... Self Talk
This one is HUGE. You don’t realize what you say to yourself, until you actually start listening.

It can be hard to tune into what you say to yourself, especially in times of frustration or fluster, but it is the first step in improving self care.

So listen up!

Be the one to respond back to your negativity, and correct your thought pattern.

Think about it, would you let anyone else speak to you - the way you’re speaking to you?

If you immediately answer is no, or absolutely not, then it’s time to reconsider what you’re chanting unconsciously to yourself.
#2… Choose Faith + Trust
This goes hand in hand with Self Talk, and was one of the aspects of self love I struggled with most.

Choosing to have faith + trust was something given to me by my personal coach, to remember that there is nothing that has not been done, created, experienced, or realized - and that I cannot “screw” anything up.

Seems a little out there to think that way, sure, but in my reality, it’s the only way I see going about life.

The moment I let go of control, of the attachment to an outcome that isn’t guaranteed, I am able to live in the present moment of Now.

Do we have any control over most outcomes in our day-to-days? No, most the time we do not.

Do we have control over external factors, like our families - friends, colleagues? No, no matter how bad we might want to be able to, we cannot control anyone or anything outside of ourselves.

So choose to have faith + trust.

Have faith that you are meant to be experiencing what you are for a greater purpose, and have trust that it is going to get you where you want to go.
#3… Let Go of Expectations + Conditions
Similar to faith + trust, letting go of expectations and conditions is another key step in improving self love, and self care.

Expectations are the death of us.

…and the leading cause of disappointment.

Wouldn’t you agree?

Whether it’s an expectation you have set for yourself, another or on how something should go - it’s likely going to bring about the opposite of what you had hoped.

Conditions… what holds us back. They keep us stuck in one place, and uncertain on letting go.

“Once I have this - I will be able to do that…”

“When I am feeling this way - I can give back to that…”

Have you caught yourself saying that before? Or committing to a change, only after the results have been created?

It unfortunately just doesn’t work that way. We have to be that of what we want now, to motivate us to do what needs to be done to achieve what we want out of the future.

So be grateful now, choose happiness today, and expect that not expecting will leave you feeling more satisfied with what is - as it is than ever before.
#4… Reflect on the Positives
The reason I chose ‘reflect’ instead of ‘focus’, or ‘be about the positives’ is because when you can reflect upon what you’ve created, changed, or behaved like in a positive manor - it makes repetition of it that much easier.

The joy reflecting can bring whether its from an accomplished task, conversation with a business partner, helping your child tie their shoes for the first time, or having a lunch date with yourself - good vibes are endless, if you choose to think about them.

Maybe you’ve been to the gym consistently, or you’re waking up earlier to spend more time getting your needs met. Without the so called ‘bad’ times, we never really would be able to know how special the good times are.

…and the positive impact those moments have on our lives. Even long after the experience is done.

Reflecting on things you have done, or are doing is much more influential to keeping consistent with it. Sure, we can focus on things that make us happy, focus on having positive thoughts, but if we can reflect on experiences we have an emotional attachment to - the takeaway is that much more powerful!

Take a deep breath, you’re putting in great work.

If you commit yourself to doing these 4 things, within your day - everyday - there is no doubt in my mind that you will not only feel more connected to yourself, but become your own best friend!

Loving ourselves is so much easier than we make it out to be, but deciding to chose love as our default is one of the hardest skills we have to master.

…but you are worth it.

You deserve to put yourself first, to love yourself, and to be able to count on yourself to show up.

So decide today, to start choosing you and applying these simple fundamentals to love yourself more.
